After tranfering the capture data to Flesh, Wood and Metal. We start to work to construct our next performance. The idea of Flesh+Wood+Metal is _ beside the installations _ all these 3 devices can become very organic musical instruments. And for the opening of our installation at the festival Mois Multi (next february 15th), we will perform on these 3 very sensitive instruments.

After 4 days of set-up and tuning all the instruments. We went on the road to capture data from the proximal territory. January is a very cold month in Quebec, snow + ice and wind. With Mateo we went near the St-Laurent river to record the waves turbulences. This data will be the input that make reakt our WOOD device. For the METAL device, it will be the topology of the city that will control the magic harm in contact with the metal plate. And finally, for FLESH, We took fields recording between industrial and schools area. FLESH is a king of sensitive tympan that will diffuse these recordings in a very strong physical ondulations.

FLESH+WOOD+METAL

Last Friday I made 2 performances at the Rennes Train Station. These performances was created from audio recordings I made during my Electroni[k] residency. It was little cold there, thank’s to all the people coming seeing me at 1am + 2am in the morning. Merci aussi à Dominique Vrignaud for taking this beautifull pictures and sharing with me photography and creation process passion.

I was so happy to see Dominique Godderis coming from Bruxelles. Dominique telling the intimate confidences into the speakers that the audience have in their hands.

Bain+Kolgen Improvisations

July 28th, 2009

One year ago, Magali and me had the idea to improvise on my drum. But not in a usual way. We decide BROKEN DOWN the drum TO ITS PHYSICAL ELEMENTS AND RAW MATERIALS. We decide to make 3 improvisations of 20 minutes for 3 days ::: Flesh, Wood and Metal was born. CONTACT MICROPHONES IN HAND – SET OUT TO EXPLORE EACH OF THE DRUM’S MATERIALS. ELEMENT BY ELEMENT, THEY EXPLORE THE SOUNDS A DRUM CAN MAKE WHEN IT’S CONVENTIONAL UTILITY IS SUBVERTED. IT IS NOT WHAT A DRUM CAN DO THAT THEY FOCUS ON, BUT WHAT A DRUM IS WHEN IT IS UNDONE. BROKEN DOWN, A DRUM IS THE COLD STEEL OF RIMS, BOLTS, CHAINS, PEDALS, BRUSHES, CYMBALS AND BELLS; IT’S THE WOOD OF SHELL AND STICK; IT’S THE SKIN OF THE DRUM AND THE BODY OF THE DRUMMER AS THE FLESH OF MUSICIAN AND INSTRUMENT ARE JOINED TOGETHER IN COMMON PURPOSE.
